Fairmont Rio de Janeiro expands sustainable practices to make guests aware of environmental preservation
Actions include eliminating single-use plastic waste from rooms, meeting areas and restaurants
Rio de Janeiro, March 2023 – Global leader in sustainability and the first brand among luxury hotels to embrace the cause, the Fairmont network has been committed for more than 25 years to achieving emission reduction targets, embracing preservation initiatives developed by Accor. And, since its inauguration in 2019, the first unit of Accor's luxury brand in South America, in Copacabana, has maintained the chain's global commitment to adopting measures to reduce environmental impacts. The actions guarantee Fairmont Rio de Janeiro Copacabana the ACQUA-HQE, international certificate of sustainable construction, developed from the French certification Démarche HQEtm (Haute Qualité Environnementale).
To confirm its commitment to socio-environmental responsibility, Fairmont Rio de Janeiro Copacabana adopts sustainable practices in its operational routine and consolidates its commitment to eliminate all plastic waste from rooms, meeting areas and restaurants. Among the new actions are the substitution of single-use plastic packaging for biodegradable and recyclable paper in amenities; the change from plastic garbage bags to kraft paper, considered the best alternative because it is 100% natural. Continuing to adopt more ecological practices in the kitchen and restaurants, the hotel joined the food reuse program, “Comida Invisível”, technology to connect those who want to donate food with those who need donations. In addition, the selective garbage collection system and the correct disposal of cooking oil are carried out through partnerships with specialized companies. In the laundry, natural products with high dilution were adopted, for greater sustainable development.
“Excellence in hospitality goes beyond welcoming people. Sustainability needs to be thought of as a strategic part of the business and part of the day-to-day operations. For this reason, we engage everyone in social, economic and environmental responsibility, making our employees, suppliers and guests aware”, says Netto Moreira, General Mananer of Fairmont Rio.
As a benchmark for the industry in conservation practices, Fairmont and Accor announced the goal of reaching net zero carbon emissions by 2050. For Netto Moreira, genuine experiences promote a rich cultural exchange between communities, ensuring long-term management of our planet. Accompanying the advancement of more ecological technology in the automotive sector, the Fairmont Rio de Janeiro Copacabana has two electric charging stations with the European Type 2 standard (power 11kW), which allow the supply of all electric and hybrid car models compatible with the standard Type 2, with recharge free for guests. Energy savings continue to be a major concern, with the use of more efficient equipment that provides lower energy consumption, with LED lamps and air conditioning with heat reuse. The use of LED lamps also guarantees savings of 33% in lighting expenses, while the thermal insulation of the envelope and the air conditioning equipment, with heat reuse, allow for an additional 34% of energy savings. In addition, an automation system allows water and energy consumption to be monitored in real time.
In bathrooms, the use of a dual flush mechanism and flow reducers in showers, faucets and sensors ensure energy and water savings. All the listed changes are being implemented for the service of the hotel's 375 rooms. It is possible to find drinking fountains to encourage the use of squeezes by guests and employees. The set of initiatives listed expand some practices implemented since the opening of the hotel in 2019, which is even more committed to sustainable development and the reduction of the environmental impact throughout its operation.
“As we look to the future, our hotel is committed to continuing to promote long-term sustainability and responsible management in each of our communities,” says Netto.
Support for small producers
“Amigos da Terra” family apiary, in Nova Friburgo, is responsible for the artisanal production of an exclusive line of organic honey, which is consumed in every hotel. Fairmont prioritizes sourcing local products as a whole, not just honey. The fresh fish that is served to guests and clients is bought directly from Colonia de Pescadores Z13, in front of the hotel, at posto 6 in Copacabana. Fairmont Rio de Janeiro Copacabana partners are part of the worldwide value of the Fairmont network that seeks to value small local producers and move the state's economy, being part of the community in which the hotel is inserted, creating connections with the population of each location.
