Since releasing the first of his three books, Life On Wheels: A Guide for Active Wheelchair Users, in 1999, Gary Karp has been a leading voice in the disability community. He has spoken and delivered training around the world, worked as a disability journalist and editor and taught disability history at university level. A wheelchair user since sustaining a spinal cord injury in 1973 at age 18, Gary has witnessed and benefited from a disability movement that has expanded access to education, employment, public spaces, adaptive technologies and civil rights. His own experience spans the era of heavy wheelchairs, inaccessible parking and restrooms and steps that limited access, including at college while earning his architecture degrees, through to a world that is now more accessible.
